Matting Change is a community-based creative project that upcycles single use plastic bags to make adult-size sleeping mats for those who are experiencing homelessness. Join TukTak Studio to learn how to make yarn from plastic and collaboratively crochet sleeping mats to be distributed in Watertown. This project aims to encourage intergenerational interaction and reimagine the use of everyday items, and foster community care.
It is strongly encouraged to come to all 4 sessions or come to as many as you are able.
The mats offer to
Those experiencing homelessness:
- A barrier from the hard surfaces they sleep on
- Insulation to combat hypothermia in the winter
- Lightweight and mobile for ease of use
- Reminder of care and love
Those creating the mats:
- Reimagining the use of everyday items
- Developing skills to reengineer
- Reliance on teamwork to make a dream work
Those gathering for the mats:
- Reimagining the use of everyday items
- Changed perspective on waste we create
- Raised awareness of small daily gestures
To everyone involved:
- An understanding of dignity
- A renewed sense of gratitude and empathy
- A changed perspective of individual impact on community
